Lee enters UCP nomination race in Red Deer – North

The race for the United Conservative nomination in Red Deer – North now has a fourth contestant.

City Councillor Lawrence Lee is the latest to announce he is seeking to represent the UCP in the next provincial election.

“I think the UCP holds a lot of the values that I have, and the principles,” Lee said Tuesday morning after announcing his decision in the Fairview neighbourhood where he grew up.

“I’m a fiscal conservative, but I’m also centred on the importance and the future evolution of our environment and our economy, and am aware of the blooming deficit that is plaguing our province right now.”

Lee was elected to his second term on Red Deer city council in October following nine years as a Red Deer Public Schools trustee. He is also a second generation entrepreneur and business owner.

He says the decision to enter provincial politics was a tough one.

“I ultimately [took] this step to really answer the question, ‘Am I able to serve Red Deer in a more meaningful and enhanced way?’ That’s what really drove me to the tipping point.”

Lee doesn’t expect his bid for the UCP nomination to impact his city council duties, but says he would take leave from council should he be successful.

“I look forward to the opportunity to represent the people of Red Deer – North. I continually hear from people that they want stronger advocacy and representation. I am passionate about being that voice for those community members and business owners.”

The UCP has not yet announced a date for the nomination vote for Red Deer – North. Other candidates seeking the nomination include Adriana LaGrange, Cole Kander and Reg Warkentin.
