A Red Deer man has been arrested following a two-week investigation by the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT).

ALERT says the Red Deer organized crime and gang team seized drugs and weapons during a search warrant on May 24 at home in the South Hill area. A 65-year-old man was arrested.

Drugs seized include crack cocaine and fentanyl, while the weapons varied from a rifle, a shotgun and a replica handgun to brass knuckles and two tasers.

There was also more than $15,000 cash proceeds of crime discovered.

“It is a win for the community to get this combination of harmful drugs and weapons out of the hands of a suspected drug dealer and off the streets of Red Deer,” said Acting Insp. John Wilson, ALERT Regional Teams.

Douglas Allan McFarlane faces two counts each of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, unlawful possession of a firearm, and unsafe storage of a firearm. He is also charged with possession of proceeds of crime. He remains in custody.

ALERT says members of the public who suspect drug or gang activity in their community can call local police, or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Crime Stoppers is always anonymous, they add.

ALERT was established and is funded by the Alberta Government and is a compilation of the province’s most sophisticated law enforcement resources committed to tackling serious and organized crime. Members of Calgary Police Service, Edmonton Police Service, Lethbridge Police Service, Medicine Hat Police Service, and RCMP work in ALERT.
