RCMP investigating death discovered during response to Amethyst House fire

May 4, 2026 | 2:32 PM

Red Deer RCMP say one person has passed away, and they were discovered while the response was occurring to a fire in the downtown area on Friday, May 1.

As reported on Friday, fire crews and RCMP responded around 1 p.m. to a fire at the residential complex known as Amethyst House, just south of 42 Street along Gaetz Avenue.

Red Deer Emergency Services had been on scene for a short time, initially looking into reported smoke.

They then stumbled upon a small but growing fire — which they stated was unrelated to the smoke — and quickly contained it.

In an update on Monday, RCMP shared that once it was safe to enter the building, they found a 34-year-old male deceased.

An autopsy to determine the manner of death is slated for May 4, and the RCMP clarifies that it is too early to say whether the fire did or did not cause the fatality.

Neither the fire nor the man’s death is believed to be suspicious, but the investigation continues.
