Red Deer’s top cop reads to young citizens

Mar 2, 2018 | 12:52 PM

Red Deer’s top cop put in a little facetime with some very young citizens on Friday.

Superintendent Ken Foster stopped in at the downtown branch of the Red Deer Public Library this morning to lead kids in preschool storytime.

His was just one in a series of appearances local Mounties have made recently to read to kids and promote literacy.

“Children and youth are a big part of our community and I think it helps break down barriers that the police aren’t this evil faction that’s going to come and take you away or give you a ticket,” Foster quipped.

“The more you can get children engaged and understand the police are really there to help society and help children is critically important. If they ever feel they need help with anything, it might open a door for them to come forward and have a discussion with a police officer.”

Foster added that could be at their school or on the street.

Foster will be reading against at the downtown branch on Wednesday, March 7 at 10 a.m. Inspector Dean Lagrange will be reading the same morning at 11 a.m during the Toddler Fun session.
