Minister evaluating Red Deer hospital expansion: Notley

Mar 1, 2018 | 5:21 PM

Premier Rachel Notley didn’t have a lot to say Thursday in regards to expansion for Red Deer Regional Hospital.

When asked about it after announcing degree-granting status for RDC, Notley reminded residents about other recent project approvals at the hospital.

“As I’m sure you know our government has approved a new obstetric unit as well as a new MRI unit at Red Deer hospital. So we are slowly working through that,” she said.

“As you also know, we inherited a pretty significant infrastructure deficit. So we are having to work through the best case scenario, the best business case and understanding where our priorities are.”

Notley said Red Deer – North MLA Kim Schreiner and Red Deer – South MLA Barb Miller continue to advocate to the Minister of Health regarding hospital expansion.

“She [minister] is reviewing this matter and should probably have more to say about it in the weeks and months to come.”

Notley was asked whether she finds it concerning that Alberta Health Services has left Red Deer Regional Hospital off of its priority infrastructure projects list.

“There’s a number of different considerations that go into those priority lists. There’s different ways that you can analyze it and look at it. The minister will have more to say on it in the time to come.”

A group of local practitioners recently received non-profit society status as they continue with their impassioned advocacy efforts for hospital expansion. They are hosting their first meeting Tuesday night (March 6 at the Baymont Inn and Suites starting at 7 p.m.) and everyone is invited to attend.
