HEAVY RAIN LEAVES STREETS, BASEMENTS FLOODED IN SOUTHWEST ONTARIO

Heavy rainfall in southwestern Ontario left scores of streets and basements flooded with some areas receiving more than 200 millimetres of rain in less than 24 hours. Lasalle, near Windsor, appeared to be hardest hit, with 285 millimetres of rain over Monday and Tuesday. Conditions will ease today thanks to a forecast calling for a mix of sun and cloud with just a 30 per cent chance of afternoon showers.

TWO CANADIANS INDICTED IN ATTACK ON U.S. PROTESTERS

Two Canadian men are among more than a dozen people indicted by a grand jury in Washington, D.C., for allegedly attacking protesters in May 2017 during a U.S. visit by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The two Canadians named in the court document are Mahmut Sami Ellialti and Ahmet Cengizhan Dereci. The indictments charge the defendants with attacking peaceful demonstrators outside the home of the Turkish ambassador to await Erdogan’s arrival after he had met with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House.

NEW BRUNSWICK TO SIGN CHILD CARE FUNDING DEAL WITH OTTAWA

The Atlantic provinces appear poised to sign federal child care funding agreements one year after demanding the federal government provide extra cash to cover what they said were their unique regional needs. After signing a funding deal Tuesday with P.E.I., Social Development Minister Jean-Yves Duclos — the federal minister in charge of the file — will be in New Brunswick today to finalize a second deal, the third since negotiations began earlier this year.

SENTENCING ARGUMENTS TODAY IN FATAL GAS AND DASH 

A judge is to hear sentencing arguments today for a driver who ran down and killed a Calgary gas station attendant who had been on the job for only two weeks. Cody Mitchell was originally charged with second-degree murder in the death of Maryam Rashidi. He was found guilty of manslaughter by a jury in May. Rashidi, who was 35, died while trying to stop Mitchell from leaving without paying for $113 in fuel.

TRUDEAU TO VISIT TWO NEW BRUNSWICK CITIES 

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau returns to the Maritimes today, visiting two cities in New Brunswick. In Moncton, Trudeau and Premier Brian Gallant will visit the child care and early learning centre at Wee College. Later in the day, Trudeau and Public Services Minister Carla Qualtrough will meet with employees at the Public Service Pay Centre in Miramichi.

CHASE THE ACE DRAW ENDING TONIGHT 

As many as 100,000 people are expected to converge on a church hall outside St. John’s today as the much-watched Chase the Ace draw comes to a close. The provincial government has said the ace of spades must be drawn today in Goulds and there could be multiple draws until someone wins a jackpot worth $2.5 million or more. Goulds has been inundated with Chase the Ace crowds most Wednesdays this summer, buying numbered tickets for about $5 each to vie for the life-changing jackpot.
