Red Deer County looks for input on new Animal Control Bylaw

Nov 2, 2017 | 9:28 AM

RED DEER COUNTY- The Planning and Development department of Red Deer County is seeking input on a proposed Animal Control Bylaw.

County staff are asking residents to provide their opinions through an online survey.

The survey asks questions on whether or not hens should be allowed in hamlets, the appropriate size of land for horses, goats etc. and the number of dogs that should be allowed on specific parcels of land.

According to Planning Manager Treena Miller, “Currently, Red Deer County does not address issues such as urban hens, nor does the County limit the number of dogs on a property. Based on increasing interest in keeping various animals on different parcel types, Red Deer County has decided it is time to undertake an Animal Control Bylaw. We are hoping the public will assist us by taking a short survey on these topics.”

County residents have until the end of November to answer the survey.

There will also be two open houses held on the subject and take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The first one will be held at the Red Deer County Centre on November 22. The second takes place in Springbrook on November 23.

The open houses are open to members of the public, and will provide an opportunity to ask more specific questions to Planning and Development staff.

Currently, regulations pertaining to the keeping of animals on a property are contained within the County’s Land Use Bylaw.

By creating a separate Animal Control Bylaw, the County will put these important regulations within their own specific document.
