Red Deer County approves 2024 tax rate bylaw

May 9, 2024 | 10:49 AM

Red Deer County’s council has approved the municipal tax rate bylaw for 2024.

Tax rates will vary on individual properties and taxation is based on their market value assessment, the County explains.

The decision was made on May 7, and the change gives the County $52.3 million in taxation to attempt to achieve their budgeted work plans for 2024.

The changes include:

  • Protective services levy decreases to 0.6140 from 0.7751
  • Community services levy increases to 1.0368 from 0.9423
  • Seniors housing levy increases to 0.0277 from 0.0182
  • Provincial police levy decreases to 0.2392 from 0.2492
  • Designated industrial property levy increases to 0.0765 from 0.0746

The province requires municipalities to levy education property taxes on their behalf based on assessment values. The overall requisition for education increases by $1.18 million. Rates will decrease to 2.4149 from 2.4248 for residential and farmland. They will increase to 3.6939 from 3.6333 for non-residential.

Dave Dittrick, director of corporate services, explains that, “given the continued inflationary pressures facing the delivery of services, we are pleased that we have been able to maintain our nonresidential tax rates at 2023 levels. Growth through new construction has helped offset what would have otherwise been a need for a higher taxation rate increase.”

Taxes are due on June 30, and a six per cent penalty will be applied to any unpaid balance on July 1, 2024, November 1, 2024, and March 1, 2025.

If you are currently enrolled in the County’s Monthly Tax Installment Plan, no additional payment is required at this time.
