No lawyer yet for Sylvan Lake man charged with killing wife

A Sylvan Lake man charged with murdering his wife last month has yet to find a lawyer.

Satnam Singh Sandhu, 41, made a brief appearance in Red Deer provincial court Friday morning.

Sandhu remains in custody charged with second-degree murder in the death of Kulvinder Sandhu. He also faces counts of attempted murder and aggravated assault during the incident.

It was at about 10 a.m. on Sept. 11 when Sylvan Lake RCMP responded to a 911 call in a residential neighbourhood. They arrived to find a 36-year-old woman suffering from serious injuries. She was taken to hospital and died from her injuries three days later.

Through an interpreter, Sandhu asked Judge James Glass asked for six months’ time to find a lawyer. Glass said that wasn’t something they could contemplate and insisted that Sandhu work quickly to secure legal counsel.

Defence lawyer George Lebessis, who acted as agent for Sandhu on Friday, told court there’s some doubt as to whether Sandhu would qualify for legal aid.

The case has been put over to Nov. 29, but could return to court sooner should Sandhu find representation before then.
