A local woman charged with the murder of her husband is due back in court next month.

Robin Berresford, 36, made her first appearance in Red Deer court on March 5 on a count of first-degree murder. Her next court appearance is scheduled for April 5.

At around 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 27, Mounties from Blackfalds and Red Deer responded to a disturbance in Red Deer County. Police arrived on scene and discovered a deceased male, 36-year-old Matthew Berresford, inside a residence.

Matthew Berresford was born in 1982 in Red Deer and according to his obituary spent his entire life in the area and was a successful businessman.

Matthew and Robin were married in 2008 and together had two children. His funeral is scheduled for April 3.

In November 2015, the couple put their large mansion just east of Red Deer on sale on Kijiji for $7.7 million. On March 2, 2016, the 25,000-square-foot home went up in flames while no one was home. The fire was later deemed suspicious and RCMP launched an investigation, but no charges were laid.
