Day 1 medal standings: Alberta takes early lead at the oval
Team Alberta has taken an early lead in the medal standings after the first day of competition in Red Deer at the 2019 Canada Winter Games.
Six medals total were handed out at Great Chief Park following the finals for both the male and female 1500 metre long track speedskating races.
On the women’s side, Calgary’s Brooklyn McDougall won Team Alberta’s first gold of the Games, clocking a 2:16.69. Both the silver and bronze went to skaters from Quebec.
“It’s a pretty amazing feeling right now. I knew the energy would be pretty high, but not this high! It was part of a crazy day, and all the hard work paid off at the end,” McDougall said. “We have been working for these Canada Games the whole season. Putting a lot of hard hours on the ice and on the bike have led to this moment.”
