$8,000 worth of non-perishable items donated to MRWS

The Mountain Rose Women Shelter now has a full stock pile of food thanks to the generous donations from members of the community that took part in their annual food drive.

The event, which had volunteers from the Church of Latter Day Saints pick up bags around town on May 27, received about $8,000 worth of non-perishable items.

The shelter’s food budget is roughly around $16,000 a year, so the food drive helps save them about $7,000-$8,000 a year since they are only 70 per cent funded and the rest is through fundraising or in-kind donations.

Executive Director for the MRWS, Cindy Easton says it’s amazing that the community has stepped up to help.

“We couldn’t do any of these fundraisers without our team of volunteers, without community members that come out and support every year and are there to help us out” she said. “We couldn’t do the job we do, keeping women and children safe when they flee domestic violence, without that kind of community support.”

Easton added that someone even donated a cheque alongside with their bag of donations

Last year’s food drive saw about $7,000 worth of items donated.
