Through My Window: Mixed Media by Margriet Hogue

Dec 18, 2018 | 9:00 AM

Red Deer Arts Council and Red Deer Public Library are pleased to present, Through My Window: Mixed Media by Margriet Hogue, which runs from December 29, 2018 to February 18, 2019 in the Kiwanis Gallery.

First Friday Opening: January 4th, 2019 from 6 to 8 pm. Artists will be in attendance.

Local artist Margriet Hogue’s series of mixed media works blends photorealism with abstract characteristics to illustrate her unique view on nature.

Hogue uses her own photographic images of flora and fauna as the focal points of her work. A number of images were literally taken through her window, overlooking her garden.

Others were shot in Red Deer’s park system or while travelling through the mountains.

Observing the natural world, whether in the wilderness or an urban setting, offers a different experience of time and how the cyclical seasons have so much to teach about the significance of life.

“Originally, I start with abstraction and use it a great deal for backgrounds, but then I add photo-transfers to this from my own reference photos that I take when I’m out and about,” says artist Margriet Hogue. “I find I like a certain amount of realism and find that, generally, people relate to it better and it’s important to me that I use my own photographs.I’m finding that my work is becoming more abstract and larger but it is all still influenced by line, colour and texture, which comes from my textile background.”
