tips to prevent fires

Sylvan Lake urges extra caution as dry conditions push fire risk higher

Apr 25, 2024 | 7:55 PM

Residents and visitors to Sylvan Lake are being urged to use great caution due to the dry spring conditions, which are pushing the fire danger risk ever higher.

According to AlbertaFireBans.ca, the town of Sylvan Lake is one of very few jurisdictions in the province without any sort of fire notice, be it an advisory, restriction or ban.

Nonetheless, the local fire department says the risk is currently ‘Very High,’ as determined by Alberta Climate Information Services.

Little to no precipitation is in the forecast for Sylvan Lake over the next seven days, and temperatures are expected to be mild.

Residents can do their part to reduce the risk of fire by:

  • Never throwing out cigarettes into easily combustible materials, such as vegetation, potted plants or landscaping, peat moss, dried grass mulch, leaves, or similar items. They can easily catch fire.
  • Placing smoking materials in deep, sturdy ashtrays.
  • Never tossing smoking materials on the ground, in a garbage, or in a dry, grassy area, as they can smolder undetected for days before igniting a fire.
  • Ensuring fire pits are properly monitored and fully extinguished
  • Learning more about proper use of fire pits by reviewing the rules and regulations in Bylaw #1793/2019 – Fire Bylaw
