Recycle the Rain: Rain Barrel Rebate Program open

May 29, 2018 | 6:35 AM

RED DEER-  The City is helping residents save water and earn money with the annual Rain Barrel Rebate Program.

Residents can apply for a rebate of 50 per cent of the cost of the rain barrel, up to a maximum of $50, which is applied to the household’s utility account.

Rebates are awarded on a first come, first served basis for qualifying applications, so residents are encouraged to apply early.

“We want to make it easy for Red Deerians to conserve water by offering the Rain Barrel Rebate Program,” said Katina Tam, Environmental Program Specialist. “The program helps residents with the cost of the rain barrel by applying a rebate to their utility bill. Residents can continue to save money on their utility bills by using the collected rainwater in their yard and household plants, reducing the amount of treated tap water used.”

When shopping for a rain barrel, residents are encouraged to look for features like a mosquito-proof screen and cover as well as a drain or spigot at the top for overflow and one at the bottom to drain the barrel.

The rain barrel should be constructed of B.P.A.-free material. Bisphenol-A is an environmental contaminant and is present in some plastics.

The rebate application form is available:

– Online through reddeer.ca/rainbarrels
– In Person – City Hall (4914 – 48 Avenue) or from the Environmental Services front desk at Civic Yards (7721 – 40 Avenue)
