Rebels pillaged by high-octane Raiders in Game 1

Mar 22, 2019 | 9:24 PM

Unfortunately for the Red Deer Rebels, they were on the wrong end of the opener in their first round WHL Playoffs series against the CHL’s second-ranked team.

The final was a 3-0 Prince Albert Raiders win, and for the first time this season, a game between the two teams was decided by more than one goal.

It took a while for either team to find a goal, but Prince Albert’s Dante Hannoun would eventually draw first blood with 32 seconds remaining in the opening period.

At 8:49 of the second, Ozzy Wiesblatt extended the lead for PA, then Sean Montgomery notched his first of the post-season at 16:53.

Headed to the third down three, the Rebels needed a minor miracle, but it wasn’t meant to be. The visiting team managed just four shots in the final period and now get set for game two on Saturday, once again at Prince Albert’s Art Hauser Centre.

Rebels netminder Ethan Anders made 25 saves, while counterpart Ian Scott made 21 stops at the other end for his ninth shutout of the season.

The shutout loss makes it two post-seasons in a row that the Rebels have started the playoffs without scoring a goal. It was a 6-0 loss in game one versus Lethbridge on Mar. 23, 2018.

Puck drop Saturday for game two is at 7 p.m. MT (6:50 on 106.7 The Drive).
