Royals Winterguard celebrates perfect season

Mar 11, 2019 | 5:18 PM

The Red Deer Royals Winterguard is celebrating a successful season that saw them finish first at every competition they were in.

They went a perfect four for four at competitions in Calgary from January 26 to February 24.

After 48 years of shuffling between rehearsal venues, this was also the second year the Royals had a permanent facility for them to practice in with the Kinsmen fieldhouse at St. Joseph High School. The team also credits its new instructors and dedicated members to their success.

The Royals have a big summer coming up and with the Winterguard season now over can now focus on what’s to come.

The team will be performing their field show against show bands from across the globe at the World Association of Marching Show Bands competition during the Calgary Stampede. From there they will head to England and Ireland to perform and celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the Red Deer Community Band Society.

The Royals have many events planned to celebrate this milestone of music, including a 50th anniversary gala on June 1 followed the next day by the Marching Show Band Classic, where show bands from across central Alberta will be coming to perform.

“There is so much to look forward to this summer,” says Heidi O’Connor, president of the Red Deer Community Band Association. “Our members are all very dedicated, they work really hard and put in a lot of time and effort and it definitely shows because they do so well. We are really looking forward to touring around this summer and for the Gala to celebrate the 50th anniversary.”

The gala on June 1 will feature live music, a silent auction and draws as well as live performances from the Royals and other marching bands. Members of the community are encouraged to buy tickets to the event and celebrate the art of music in red deer by attending. Tickets will be on sale in the upcoming weeks at ticketsalberta.ca.
