RED DEER- The Red Deer Fencing Club (RDFC) hosted their annual Red Deer Open tournament at their new location in Gasoline Alley on March 2 and 3.

About 40 fencers were registered in several events.

The two-day long competition saw a total of six epee events, drawing fencers from several clubs in Calgary to participate with the Red Deer fencers.

Several  of the RDFC members made their way to the podium.

Louise Zanussi won a bronze medal in the veteran’s event.

Michelle Ostrikoff picked up two bronze medals, and Karen Lyver won silver and bronze medals in the senior women’s open and the veterans events.

In men’s veteran epee, Robert Forsstrom won silver and Dave Coates a bronze medal.

Two younger Red Deer fencers also landed on the podium.

In the y11 event, Nicolas Pelz won a silver and Bracken Hilman won a bronze.

In U17 mixed epee, Alexander Brehaut finished seventh.

In U20 mixed epee, Braden Weiss finished sixth, and Megan Ostrikoff placed ninth.

In senior men’s epee, Nraden Weiss placed sixth, and Robert Forsstrom finished seventh.

In Senior women’s epee, Megan Ostrikoff finished seventh, and Louise Zanussi placed eighth.

The sport of fencing was one of the first sports included in the Olympic games.

With three types of weapons in total (sabre, foil, and epee), there’s something for everyone.

There are many clubs throughout Alberta, each of which focuses on their weapon of choice, with RDFC’s being epee.

As such, the tournament that took place this past weekend included only epee events.
