Provincials this weekend for RDC Curling teams

Feb 20, 2019 | 11:52 AM

The Red Deer College Kings (7-5 record), Queens (7-5) and Mixed (5-5) curling teams will take to the ice for the ACAC Curling Championships from Friday, February 22 to Sunday, February 24 at the Olds Curling Club.

Both the Kings and Queens finished third in qualifying while the mixed team captured the final playoff spot.

Even though the RDC teams last played January 27 at the Winter Regional, Head Coach Brad Hamilton sees an inspired group who has practiced beyond expectations.

“Preparation has been good,” he says. “All three teams are very self-motivated so it isn’t hard to get them to practice, and several athletes throw rocks on their own.”

The MacEwan University Griffins (11-1), NAIT Ooks (8-4), RDC Queens (7-5) and University of Alberta Augustana Vikings (5-7) will compete for the women’s title.

In the mixed division, the U of A Augustana Vikings (8-2) will challenge the Lakeland College Rustlers (7-3), NAIT Ooks (7-3) and the RDC team (5-5).

With the women’s and mixed divisions very close, the teams that peak at the right time could walk away with some hardware. “I think the mixed and women’s divisions are very even. Whoever plays their best this weekend will probably win,” says Hamilton. “Our mixed team is probably the dark horse but has had close games against the other three teams.”

Competing for men’s gold are the undefeated NAIT Ooks (12-0), Concordia University Thunder (9-3), RDC Kings (7-5) and Lakeland College Rustlers (5-7). “NAIT is a definite favourite in the men’s division but the other three teams are all very solid teams,” says Hamilton.
