Kings Volleyball ride hot streak into provincials

Feb 20, 2019 | 11:49 AM

The RDC Kings are prepared to compete at the ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship in Edmonton after a strong finish to conference play.

The Kings wrapped up the regular season on an incredible roll. In their past 17 matches, the RDC Kings went 15-2 in ACAC action, including a pair of road victories against the previously undefeated Lethbridge College Kodiaks.

The Kings (18-6) will play the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings (15-9) Thursday at 1:00 p.m. in the opening match of the championship. The Kings sealed second in the south with 36 points. The U of A Augustana Vikings wrapped up third spot in the north with 30 points, and won six of their past ten matches.

RDC right side hitter Regan Fathers had an outstanding regular season campaign, totaling 435 kills which was the most in the league. Setter Thomas Wass averaged 10.12 assists per set, the highest in ACAC Men’s Volleyball. Mark DeWit has been very effective at the net all year, ranking among the top blockers in the league.

Kings Head Coach Aaron Schulha likes the preparation and mindset from the student-athletes. “The level of training has been solid and guys are excited for Conference Championships,” he says.

Schulha views the Vikings as a balanced group, but wants the Kings to focus on their execution.

“Augustana is a well-rounded team with some veteran pieces,” he says. “However, I think that we match up well with them, and if we play our game and take care of the ball, the result should look after itself.”

The Kings will be hosting Nationals at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, March 6-9.
