RDC Athletics announces Boston Pizza Athletes of the Week

Feb 20, 2019 | 8:16 AM

A Queens hockey player and Kings basketball player have been named this week’s RDC Athletics Boston Pizza Athletes of the Week.

RDC Athletics officials say Neisha Germann had a tremendous weekend on the ice, helping the Queens (10-9-5-0) earn three of a possible four points in the standings.

On Friday, the second-year forward scored a hat trick, including the game-winning-goal, which propelled the Queens to a 4-3 road victory. Germann was named the Queens Player-of-the-Game for her outstanding effort and performance.

Then in Saturday’s double overtime setback, the Bachelor of Kinesiology student assisted on RDC’s lone goal and was a big factor in the Queens earning another point.

Incredibly, the talented student-athlete from Lloydminster, Saskatchewan was involved in 80 per cent of the Red Deer College Queens’ goals this past weekend.

Meanwhile, some student-athletes elevate their performance when the gravity of the game increases, and RDC’s Khurram Sultan was clutch this past weekend against the Ambrose University Lions on the road.

As the Kings are battling for a playoff position in the south, the fifth-year was a key player in helping pilot an incredible rally down 27 points in the third quarter, to eventually defeat the Lions 91-88. The staggering comeback was one of the biggest in the history of Kings Basketball.

Ten of Sultan’s 24 points came in the fourth quarter, and he shot 100 per cent in the final ten minutes, when it mattered the most. Sultan also contributed three rebounds and one steal in the game.

In the final quarter, the Open Studies student hit three out of three from beyond the three-point arc and went one-for-one from the free-throw line, earning the Kings Player-of-the-Game. The guard from Edmonton energized the Kings to 36 points in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lions by 23 (36-13) and helping RDC earn a critical win.

With the victory, the Red Deer College Kings (11-8) hold fourth spot in the tough south division. The Kings have been on an incredible roll, winning six consecutive games.
