Red Deer girl selling cupcakes once again to support humane society

For the sixth year in a row, a special fundraiser for the Central Alberta Humane Society has been set-up by 10-year-old Jayda Monilaws.

Her annual cupcake fundraiser will take place this Friday (Feb. 22nd) at the society’s office at 4505 77 Street starting at 10 a.m.

Jayda’s mom Nicki is incredibly proud of her generosity.

“For her to decide that was something she wanted to do was huge, and it was just an easy way for her to give back to the community. Because of her age she couldn’t do a lot of things I was partaking in, but it’s amazing to see her enthusiasm.”

Jayda explained why she started her cupcake fundraiser.

“When I was younger my parents would get a babysitter to watch me, and they would got help the homeless shelter, and I would get really jealous, I couldn’t volunteer. So then we were trying to think of stuff to do, then we came across cupcakes for the Central Alberta Humane Society. That was perfect because I love animals and cupcakes,” she said chuckling.

Over the years the event has seen a great amount of success, growing from $96.50 raised in 2014 to over $4,000 last year.

Nicki is unsure if that upward trend will continue.

“It’s tough to be perfectly honest. We’ve had a chat with (Jayda) and explained economy, and what that means right now, also explaining that the Winter Games are in town so we’re not sure how this is going to pan out.”

Despite the uncertainty of how much it will raise, Jayda is still exited for the event.

“It’s really fun, it just makes lots of animals happy, just because if they need food or shelter or vet bills or therapy it helps them.”
