Several options for central Albertans this Family Day long weekend

With the 2019 Canada Winter Games set to kick-off in Red Deer Feb. 15, central Alberta will be an extra busy place with several Family Day long weekend events also slated over the next few days.

Starting Feb. 16, the Town of Sylvan Lake is hosting its annual Winterfest and Polar Bear Dip.

On Saturday, the event will feature a Lions pancake breakfast, “Frozen” party, Winterfest Farmer’s Market, Family Fun at the Lake, Polar Bear Dip and fireworks.

Sunday will feature the 2019 Alberta Oval Ice Racing Championship Series, while Family Day Monday will have the Tim Hortons Free Public Skate at the NexSource Centre.

In addition, all three days of the long weekend are a Family Fishing Weekend as residents and visitors can fish without a license but all regulations still apply.

The Town of Penhold will host its Winterfest on Feb. 17, with activities at the Multiplex running from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

The event includes bouncy castles, face painting, sleigh rides, crafts, fire pits and hot chocolate.

In the Town of Innisfail, Family Day celebrations will take place on Feb. 18.

Hosted by Innisfail Recreation and Culture, activities will run from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and include family curling at the Innisfail Curling Club and outdoor skating, hay rides, fire truck display and Kinsmen BBQ at the Twin Arenas, in addition to a family swim at the Aquatic Centre.

In the Town of Blackfalds, Winterfest activities take place on Family Day Monday, Feb. 18 and will offer free, family oriented activities throughout town from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Activities include a Dual Ice Development Society pancake breakfast, the Servus Kidz Zone, ice carving workshops and demonstrations, horse wagons rides and ice slides.

In addition to free admission at the Abbey Centre, there will also be a Fire Department BBQ, hot chocolate, the Polar Bear Dip, free family skate at the Multi-Plex Arena, family bingo and a family game night.
