Significant quantities of drugs and cash seized in RCMP traffic stop near Banff

A traffic stop near Banff has resulted in the seizure of over 342 pounds of illegal drugs and thousands of dollars in cash.

On Jan. 26, Mounties say the traffic stop led a member from Alberta RCMP Traffic Services to form grounds the lone occupant of the vehicle was in possession of cannabis for the purpose of distribution.

A subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of approximately 326 pounds of cannabis, 10 pounds of psilocybin mushrooms, four and a half pounds of cannabis resin (shatter), two pounds of THC edibles and $11,000 in Canadian currency.

Police say the cannabis seized in the stop would be enough to make over 440,000 average-sized joints, while the mushrooms seized would roughly equate to 9,000 average doses.

“We remind Albertans that cannabis trafficking is illegal,” says Cpl. Kyle Maetche, Alberta RCMP Traffic Services, in a press release. “The recent legalization of cannabis means that there are legal avenues to obtain and consume cannabis. I am very proud of the great team work and determination that our members display across the province to keep Albertans safe.”

Mounties say Alberta RCMP Traffic Services goes beyond promoting road safety through enforcement activities, adding they will continue to work closely with other law enforcement and safety partners to keep traveling criminals off Alberta roads and further reduce crime in the province.
