The Red Deer Rebels kicked off their three-game road trip Wednesday night with a 3-2 win over the Swift Current Broncos.

The Rebels improved to 23-13-2-1 on the season (42 points).

Carter Chorney opened the scoring for the Broncos just 1:56 into the game. Dawson Barteaux tied it for Red Deer with a power play goal at the 9:19 mark.

Brandon Hagel put the Rebels up 2-1 with his 23rd goal of the year 8:15 into period two.

Joona Kiviniemi pulled the Broncos even 9:18 into period three before Zak Smith scored the game winner for Red Deer at 13:02.

Byron Fancy earned the win in net for Red Deer turning aside 21 of the 23 shots he faced.

Isaac Poulter was impressive between the pipes for Swift Current making 34 saves. Poulter became the Broncos’ starting goalie earlier in the day after Joel Hofer was traded to the Portland Winterhawks in exchange for a package of six WHL Bantam Draft picks.

Swift Current also added former Rebels netminder Riley Lamb on Wednesday. The overager had been in the SJHL with the Yorkton Terriers after being released by the Rebels prior to the start of the season.

Defenceman Alexander Alexeyev picked up an assist in his return to the Rebels lineup after winning a bronze medal with Russia at the World Junior Hockey Championships.

The trip continues for the Rebels on Friday night when they visit the Brandon Wheat Kings (6 p.m. on 106.7 THE DRIVE).
