Local municipalities launch 2A South Regional Transit

Dec 18, 2018 | 11:03 AM

A brand new regional transit service is set to roll throughout central Alberta next year.

According to officials with Red Deer County, representatives from the Government of Alberta, Red Deer County, Town of Innisfail, Town of Penhold, and City of Red Deer made the announcement on Tuesday.

The launch of the new pilot, a service known as 2A South Regional Transit, connects residents in these partnering communities with various locations in the region.

County officials say the Government of Alberta provided $700,000 in funding from the Rural Transportation Pilot Project program to help launch the service.

2A South Regional Transit will connect with Red Deer Transit at the Bower Place bus stop and allow residents from these communities to connect with multiple Red Deer Transit routes using one main connection.

Anyone interested in trying 2A South Regional Transit starting January 14, 2019 is encouraged to take advantage of free rides during the first month of operations.

After January, fares will be priced at $5.00 per trip.

“The 2A South Regional Transit project will offer tremendous mobility for those who do not drive – or choose not to drive – to connect with the people and places that matter to them,” says Red Deer County Community Services Manager Jo-Ann Symington, in a press release. “This pilot project will serve as a real-time test of the demand for ongoing transit from these communities.”
