Mountie dragged under car during Penhold traffic stop

Dec 17, 2018 | 2:17 PM

A Red Deer man is facing charges after an RCMP vehicle was rammed in Penhold Sunday night and an officer injured after being dragged during an arrest attempt.

The incident happened around 11:00 p.m. when Innisfail Mounties on routine patrol in Penhold noted a vehicle idling outside the Penholder Tavern.

Police conducted a traffic stop with the vehicle and noted the license plate on it was registered to a different vehicle.

When officers approached, RCMP say the lone male driver became agitated, yelling at police to shut their lights off and rolled his windows up and locked his doors.

Mounties continued to interact with the driver when he reversed his vehicle into the front of the fully marked police vehicle that was parked behind him, causing damage.

Police say they attempted to arrest the man and an altercation took place that resulted in an officer being dragged approximately 15 feet, sustaining minor injuries as a result.

Red Deer RCMP later located the vehicle in Red Deer. Innisfail and Red Deer Mounties located the male and arrested him without further incident.

Chasetin Morin, 24, has been charged with two counts of assault police officer with a weapon, resist arrest, two counts of breach recognizance, fail to stop for police officer, possess property obtained by crime over $5,000, drive uninsured motor vehicle, fail to remain at the scene of a collision, drive unauthorized, drive unreasonable speed and fail to stop at stop sign.

Morin has been remanded to appear in Red Deer provincial court on Tuesday.
