Sylvan Lakers show spirit of giving during weekend charity checkstop

Some less fortunate families in Sylvan Lake stand to benefit from a charity checkstop held in the community on Saturday.

On December 8, members of Sylvan Lake Emergency Services gathered along 47 Avenue to collect new unwrapped toys and non-perishable food and cash during the checkstop to assist local charities.

Sylvan Lake Fire Chief Cliff Brausen says the Sylvan Lake Christmas Bureau and Sylvan Lake Food Bank split the cash proceeds of Saturday’s collection efforts 50-50.

“We collected just over $13,400,” reveals Brausen. “We are very, very happy with those totals, along with obviously some toys for the Christmas Bureau and some food for the Food Bank. We didn’t really weigh anything but there seemed to be a fair amount of both.”

However, Chief Brausen says Sylvan Lakers have once again shown their generosity.

“Obviously the economy isn’t really good in this part of the province and there’s obviously some families that need assistance from other people and I think the generosity is outstanding,” states Brausen. “There was a lot of people that were more than happy to give, there was a lot of people that drive through, didn’t have anything and went to the grocery store, went to the retail stores and came back with a whole bunch of stuff, so they certainly went out of their way to help us out.”

“Hopefully we made this season a little brighter for some families that are in need,” adds Brausen. “I want to thank members of the Sylvan Lake Fire Department, Sylvan Lake RCMP, Town of Sylvan Lake Municipal Enforcement and also a few of the ladies came out from the Victim Services Unit, so it was great to see everybody get together and put our time and efforts into a very, very worthy cause.”
