Jevne hat trick sends Rebels to third loss in a row

MEDICINE HAT — Ryan Jevne opened and closed the curtain on the Red Deer Rebels Wednesday night.

The alternate captain picked up his first career hat trick and added an assist as the Medicine Hat Tigers dropped the Red Deer Rebels 6-2 at the Canalta Centre in Medicine Hat.

Jevne scored the game’s first and last markers and was named the game’s first star for his performance.

Medicine Hat is now 3-0 against Red Deer this season and 12-12-1-2. They also handed the Rebels, who are now 16-8-1-0, a 7-3 loss at the Enmax Centrium on Saturday.

Despite the loss, Red Deer remains first place in the Central Division.

Mads Sogaard made 21 saves to improve his record to 7-2-1-2 while Byron Fancy was busy making 41 stops for Red Deer in the loss.

The scoreless tie was broken in the second period as Jevne snapped a high shot over the glove of Byron Fancy from the top of the circle.

Zak Smith tied the game less than three minutes later, dipping low on his off-wing before swooping in front of Mads Sogaard and chipping it over his blocker.

63 seconds later, Ryan Chyzowski beat Fancy from the high slot to regain the Tabbies lead. But the Rebels leading scorer, Brandon Hagel, stormed the net off an offensive zone draw and Jeff de Wit mustered it passed Sogaard to square the game 2-2.

Defenceman Trevor Longo gave the Tigers their third lead of the game early in the third, deflecting a slap-pass from Bryan Lockner into the Rebels net. Longo also scored last Saturday in Red Deer.

Some seven minute later, Daniel Baker threw a shot on Fancy. The rebound hit Tigers captain James Hamblin and bounced into the cage to increase the lead to 4-2.

Sogaard’s best stop of the night arguably came short-handed midway through the third frame. Chris Douglas was left alone in the slot and one-timed a pass from the corner. The Danish rookie gobbled it up with no rebound.

Moments later, Jevne went hard to the Rebels net and whacked home a loose rebound to strengthen the Tigers lead to 5-2. The overage Tigers veteran completed his hat-trick with under two minutes to go.

The Rebels are off Thursday before returning to the Enmax Centrium for games Friday vs. Calgary and Saturday vs. Moose Jaw.
