Rebels drop close one in Prince Albert

Oct 14, 2018 | 12:40 AM

The WHL’s number one team got revenge on the Red Deer Rebels Saturday night.

Last weekend, the Rebels handed the Prince Albert Raiders their first loss of the season. The Raiders redeemed themselves Saturday by defeating Red Deer 2-1, improving their season record to 9-1 in the process.

The now 5-3-1 Rebels, to their credit, played a tight game against the stingy Raiders.

Prince Albert’s Sean Montgomery started off the scoring with his second of the season 1:08 into the game.

Three minutes later, Rebels captain Reese Johnson scored his fifth to even the score. Josh Tarzwell got the assist.

The score was remained 1-1 until five minutes into the third when Brett Leason scored the game winner.

Both teams were 0/2 on the power play. Red Deer outshot Prince Albert 29-27, including 12-5 in the final frame.

Rebels goalie Ethan Anders made 25 saves.

Next up for the Rebels is a chance at redemption against the Oil Kings on Friday night at Rogers Place. Red Deer lost its first two games of the season to Edmonton. The broadcast can be heard on 106.7 The Drive starting at 6:50 p.m.

The Rebels return home Saturday night for the first of four straight at the Enmax Centrium versus Kootenay.
