Georgina Lightning, esteemed filmmaker from Samson Cree, passes at 63
Condolences have been pouring in since Saturday night from community members remembering the profound life of Cree filmmaker Georgina Lightning.
Lightning, who was from Samson Cree Nation in Maskwacis, died Saturday during the annual Indian Relays event at the Enoch Cree Rodeo Grounds.
RCMP say they responded just before 7 p.m. after a woman, later confirmed to be Lightning, was doing photography of the races from a designated area when a horse veered off the track and struck her.
In a statement posted to social media, Enoch Cree Nation said, “Chief and council extend our most sincere condolences to the family. Our community is grieving, and we are holding them in our thoughts and prayers.”
