Fire destroys home in Mirror

Oct 5, 2018 | 3:22 PM

An investigation is underway into the cause of a fire that destroyed a one and a half storey home in the hamlet of Mirror Friday morning.

Lacombe County Fire Chief Drayton Bussiere says they received the call around 8:00 a.m. and found the home on 49 Street fully engulfed in flames when they arrived.

“We had crews from Alix Fire Department and from Clive, as well as from Mirror,” states Bussiere. “It was kind of a defensive operation right from the beginning.”

He says no one was hurt and the home where one adult male lived was unoccupied at the time.

However, the home’s clay tiles posed a unique challenge for firefighters, according to Bussiere.

“It’s unique for Alberta but also is unique in the sense that it just creates different challenges with heat,” he explains. “It kind of holds everything inside the structure a bit differently than with a shingle roof and so that presents a few challenges for the guys for sure.”

Bussiere admits they have a general idea of where the fire started but it’s not considered suspicious at this point.

“I suspect the wood stove was part of the cause,” says Bussiere. “It’s that time of year where people are trying to heat their homes a bit better and do those things. So I think not necessarily related to this incident, but I always like to remind people this time of year to make sure they have their furnaces cleaned and wood stoves cleaned and serviced early on when it starts to get cool so you can avoid any problems with that.”

Bussiere estimates damage from the blaze to be roughly $250,000, adding the home is now uninhabitable.
