Red Deer unemployment rate rises in August

There was a jump in the Red Deer area unemployment rate last month.

Numbers released Friday morning by Statistics Canada shows our region’s jobless rate reached 6.7 per cent in August, up from 5.6 in July.

Red Deer’s unemployment rate in August 2017 was 5.6 per cent.

Alberta’s jobless rate last month was also 6.7 per cent, the same as in July. Employment in the province increased by 16,000 last month, but the unemployment rate remained the same as more people entered the labour market.

Canada’s unemployment rate rose to 6.0 per cent last month from 5.8 in July. Statistics Canada says the number of full-time jobs rose by 40,400, but that was offset by a drop of 92,000 part-time positions. Economists had expected an increase of 5,000 jobs for August.
