Council passes development for Helen Hunley Park

An elaborate entrance, log cabin picnic shelter and lighting features will soon be added to Helen Hunley Park next to the Rocky Museum.

Rocky Mountain House Town Council approved the $240,000 development which will be entirely funded by the Helen Hunley Foundation.

The entranceway will be roughly 50 feet long and 15 feet high, meant to hide the public washrooms and attract attention from passing tourists.

It will feature a bronze plated statue of David Thompson in a canoe, which will be an interactive piece to take pictures with.

Council also requested a large plaque on the feature wall dedicated to Helen Hunley and what she did for Rocky Mountain House.

In addition, a log amphitheatre shelter will be built where the old playground currently stands.

Council raised concerns about security in the park, since it will be hidden by the large feature wall. As a result, security cameras will be installed, as well as LED lighting on pathways, around the washroom and entranceway.

Council has hopes that the new additions will attract tourists to Rocky Mountain House, and promote the town through social media.
