The Red Deer Rebels made several moves Monday as they work toward finalizing their roster for the 2018-19 WHL season.

The Rebels sent 18-year-old forward Brandon Cutler and a second round selection in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft to the Victoria Royals in exchange for 16-year-old forward Dallon Melin and a fifth round pick in next year’s draft.

Cutler, a native of Spruce Grove, had 38 points in 108 regular season games for the Rebels, who selected him 192nd overall at the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft.

Melin had 20 points in 27 games in the Alberta Midget Hockey League last season with Sherwood Park. He finished the season playing four games in the AJHL with Camrose.

The Rebels made a second trade on Monday as they sent 18-year-old defenceman Sam Pouliot to the Swift Current Broncos in exchange for a conditional WHL Bantam Draft pick.

Pouliot had one point in 16 games with the Rebels last season and also spent time in the BCHL with Powell River.

Also on Monday, the Rebels announced the reassignment of 17-year old defenceman Nic Draffin to a Junior A team to be determined, 16-year old defenceman Jace Isley to Sherwood Park (AMHL), 15-year old defenceman Kyle Masters to OHA Edmonton midget prep, 15-year old defenceman Trey Patterson to the Calgary Buffaloes (AMHL), 15-year old forward forward Jayden Grubbe to the Calgary Buffaloes (AMHL), and 16-year old goaltender Carter Serhyenko to Battleford (SMHL).

The moves leave the Rebels with 27 players on their roster.

The Rebels continue preseason action this Saturday, Sept. 8 when they take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes in Wainwright.

Five Rebels players will be attending NHL rookie camps starting later this week – Alex Alexeyev (WAS), Dawson Barteaux (DAL), Brandon Hagel (MTL), Jacob Herauf (PIT), and Reese Johnson (NYR).
