Brazeau County unveils latest solar project

Jul 24, 2018 | 7:02 AM

The sun broke through the clouds Monday morning to energize the crowd gathered at the Breton Fire Hall for the unveiling of Brazeau County’s final solar project.

The solar modules for the hall marks the fourth and final project between the county and ENMAX, following previous projects at the Lodgepole Fire Hall, Rocky Rapids Water Treatment Plant and the County Administration building.

Over 1,000 solar panels are now generating power on all four buildings, allowing Brazeau County to meet 34 per cent of its combined annual electricity needs with an annual estimated savings of $18,600.

“We are being an environmental leader, and we are putting our money where our mouth is,” remarked Deputy Reeve Donna Wiltse.

Members of Brazeau County Council along with Drayton Valley Town Council members were on hand for the official launch of the project. MLA for Drayton Valley-Devon, Mark Smith was also in attendance.

Smith commended the project, adding “Here is an example of taking creative entrepreneurial Alberta experience at the municipal level and matching it to the energy needs of the province.”

Wiltse said that all four projects produce enough alternative energy to power over 40 average households, and encouraged residents of the county to make the switch to energy efficient products like lightbulbs.
