GSA court challenge underway in Medicine Hat

Jun 21, 2018 | 5:56 AM

MEDICINE HAT- The first court challenge against Alberta’s gay-straight alliance rules is now in the hands of a judge.

Both sides told a Medicine Hat court yesterday that children will be harmed if the decision doesn’t go their way.

The legislation bars schools from telling parents if their children join G-S-As.

Representatives from the Calgary Sexual Health Centre, who have successfully applied for intervenor status in the case, said they were hoping to give a voice to LGBTQ youth.

The challenge comes following the passage of Bill 24 by the NDP Government last November.

The bill amends the School Act, banning schools from telling parents if their child is a member of a gay-straight alliance.

The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms is leading the challenge to the law.

The group is representing 25 faith-based schools and other organizations in Alberta.

Gay-straight alliances are peer support networks organized by students meant to help gay kids feel welcome and to prevent bullying or abuse.
