Rebels super fan Trevor Pare passes away

Jun 15, 2018 | 2:54 PM

The Red Deer Rebels are mourning the loss of their biggest fan.

Trevor Pare has passed away Thursday following a courageous lifelong fight with Pompe Disease. He was 28.

“We’d like to extend our sympathies to the Pare family on the passing of lifelong fan Trevor, or as we knew him, @rampagerebel,” the Rebels tweeted Friday. “Trevor didn’t have an easy life, but he never missed a game! RIP friend.”

Along with the Rebels, Pare was a diehard fan of the Edmonton Oilers and Eskimos, Seattle Seahawks and his hometown Innisfail Eagles, and he was never shy to show off is pride for them.

“My dream is to become a sports broadcaster,” he told CBC in 2010. “I’ve always loved sports and watching sports. That’s my career goal.”

Trevor was also a big fan of music and loved to attend as many concerts as possible.

Pompe is a hereditary disease caused by a mutation in the gene that produces the enzyme alpha-glucosidase, which the body needs to break down glycogen. It affects less than a thousand people worldwide.

Trevor was diagnosed with Pompe as a baby. His mom, Linda Pare shared his story on the Canadian Association of Pompe website.

“I was told Trevor would never sit, stand, walk or possibly never hold his head up and would probably not see his second birthday,” she wrote.

Trevor lived well beyond that due in part to an experimental drug, Myozyme. He was part of a clinical trial for the drug for several years.

In Trevor’s memory, donations to the Canadian Association of Pompe are encouraged.
