Community garden takes root in Riverside Meadows

A new community garden has sprouted in a central Red Deer neighbourhood.

The 21-bed garden recently opened in Riverside Meadows, an area in need of some good news according to the vice president of the local community association.

Chad Krahn says it turns out community gardens are hard to pull off this day and age.

“It ended up being a really fun adventure in creating partnership. The community association is partnering with City Chapel Fellowship, which is the church that owns the land,” he says.

The City of Red Deer provided a grant for lumber, while another garden being discontinued donated the soil.

“There’s a lot of negative press right now, some of it self-inflicted, some of it just the way it is,” Krahn adds. “To transform a vacant lot into a space for community connection where people can meet their neighbours and grow vegetables, ultimately the hope is that this is a symbol of a community growing together in a neighbourhood where there is a lot of disconnection.”

The Riverside Meadows community garden is for area residents only, however there are seven others across Red Deer.

The City also offers a Garden Plot program.
