Wolf Creek installing cameras on school buses

If you’re going to pass a Wolf Creek Public Schools bus this fall, you’d best be doing so legally.

The school division is installing surveillance cameras on its school buses starting with six brand new vehicles this September.

Superintendent Jayson Lovell says incidents of motorists speeding past school buses while students are boarding and exiting have increased over time.

“We did some work with our bus supplier and they can actually hard-wire our buses so that they’re prepared for camera installation,” he explains. “We’ve had some cases where it’s been reported and we had our bus drivers attend court to speak to the details of those situations.”

Lovell says it’s ultimately about making sure students are safe while in the care of the school district.

“Ultimately, we find being proactive and making sure our public is aware that we are moving towards that kind of ability to record is important,” he continues.

Each bus will have four high-definition cameras – one at the door, one at mid-cabin facing forward, another at the back of the bus facing forward, and one on the arm of exterior stop sign.

The interior cameras will also allow Wolf Creek to surveil any incidents which may occur on the bus, though Lovell admits those aren’t abundant.

The cost to outfit each bus is approximately $3500 and eventually all the division’s buses will have them.

There will be more communication with parents over the summer to ensure the division is meeting all privacy requirements.
