Humboldt Bronco Shumlanski makes statement after release from hospital

The first member of the Humboldt Broncos organization to be released from the hospital after a bus accident left 15 players and staff members dead Friday has issued a public statement.

In a Twitter post made Sunday night, 20-year-old centre Nicholas Shumlanski said he’s still struggling to come to grips with the tragedy, but thanked the community for all of the support he’s received in recent days.

“Although reality hasn’t really set in yet, it is truly devastating to have lost so many close friends, brothers and amazing coaches,” Shumlanski wrote. “Times are tough right now but the support you all have shown is amazing. May you please keep everyone involved in this tragedy in your thoughts and prayers.”

Shumlanski said a doctor told him “it was truly a miracle” he was able to walk away from the accident, suffering only minor injuries.
