Alberta Culture Days 2017 to be celebrated in Red Deer

Red Deer has been selected as a host celebration site for Alberta Culture Days 2017, and the Red Deer Arts Council could not be more thrilled.

Alberta Culture Days runs from September 29 until October 1 and is the largest celebration of heritage, arts, community spirit and cultural diversity provincially.

Streets downtown will come alive with an arts jam, a pop-up gallery, museum and art exhibits, music, theatre games, kids’ activities, and dance, live figure drawing, demonstration artists, plays and all manner of arts and culture events.

“Alberta is such a diverse and vibrant province, and Alberta Culture Days is one way we celebrate our unique spirit,” said Ricardo Miranda, Minister of Culture and Tourism.

Many community partners are involved co-hosting the event including City of Red Deer Culture Services, Red Deer College Arts Centre and Red Deer College, both Red Deer school boards, Red Deer Public Library, Red Deer Cultural Heritage Society, and more.

Alberta Culture Days began as a one-day event in 2008 as Alberta Arts Day meant to recognize the value of Alberta’s arts and cultural communities. Since then it has expanded to a three-day province-wide celebration.

“This year marks the 10th anniversary of Alberta Culture Days and we look forward to Red Deer helping to make it the best year ever,” said Miranda.

Events will take place around the city including school performances and artists in the schools, these are not public events.

Public events on Friday the 29th include a Hootenanny under the Big Top at the Golden Circle at 5 p.m., the Central Alberta Film Festival at the Snell Auditorium at the Red Deer Public Library downtown branch starting at 5:30 p.m., Red Deer Reads Community Launch Party at 7 p.m., Bull Skit Comedy presenting Sketchfest at the Scott Block Theatre at 8 p.m. and more.

On the 30th the public is welcome to attend a Celebration of Dance at the Knox Presbyterian Church at 10 a.m., the Norwegian Laft Hus open house at 10 a.m., Canada 150 Art Ham at 10 a.m., Hip Hop & Rap on the Ross Street Patio at 10 a.m., MAGnificent Saturdays at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery at 1 p.m. and more.

Sunday October 1 events around the city include Just a Few Lines: Performance by Paul Boultbee at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery at 2 p.m., and Bull Skit Comedy presenting Sketchfest at 8 p.m.

Some events require a paid admission but many are free to attend. Information about all of the events is available here including tickets and times.
