Elections chief issues warning about AI’s influence on voters

Nov 3, 2026 | 2:20 PM

OTTAWA — Canada’s chief electoral officer is raising concerns about the rising influence of AI on the democratic process.

Stéphane Perrault says voters are now more likely to use AI agents than Elections Canada’s official website to get names of political candidates or information about where to cast a ballot.

That information is sometimes unreliable or wrong.

Perrault was speaking today to MPs on the House of Commons science and research committee, which is studying the broader issue of the risks AI poses to Canadian institutions.
