RDCRS Board of Trustees dedicates $30K to The Mustard Seed for school lunch program

Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools Board of Trustees has directed $30,000 to The Mustard Seed to help feed vulnerable students.

More specifically, the funds are meant to sustain and expand daily lunch deliveries across division schools.

According to a media release, the $30,000 funding allocation will go directly toward offsetting rising food preparation, wholesale ingredient, and distribution costs for students who rely on school meals.

Currently, the Mustard Seed’s School Lunch Program distributes over 600-650 fresh lunches every school morning to students across regional schools, including key Catholic sites across Red Deer, Sylvan Lake, Innisfail, and Olds.

“When a child sits in class hungry, learning takes a back seat to survival,” said Chris Andrew, Board Chair of Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools, in a media release. “We have had a longstanding partnership with The Mustard Seed, where our students learn from taking part in preparing lunches for our students who benefit directly from the lunch program focused on those who need it.”

The funding guarantees that eligible students receive a complete, balanced lunch daily, which consists of a fresh sandwich, whole fruits and vegetables, and healthy snacks such as yogurt or granola bars.

“The School Lunch Program provides students with fresh, wholesome food,” said Scott Tilbury, Senior Development Officer at The Mustard Seed. “This $30,000 contribution from the RDCRS Board of Trustees ensures hundreds of local children don’t have to face the school day on an empty stomach- they are nourished and ready to learn.”

Per the RDCRS, in tandem with the funding support, students engage in active service projects:

  • Early morning food preparation: Senior students, leadership clubs, and campus ministry teams from École Secondaire Notre Dame High School and St. Joseph High School actively volunteer during early morning prep shifts at The Mustard Seed commercial kitchen, helping staff pack sandwiches and sort fruit bins.
  • Division-wide supply drives: Elementary and middle schools lead seasonal food collections, gathering breakfast items and pantry staples to assist The Mustard Seed in assembling weekend food hampers for division families in need.
