Red Deer RCMP warn of phone number ‘spoofing’ scam

Oct 29, 2026 | 4:29 PM

Red Deer RCMP say they received multiple reports on Oct. 29 of people being called by likely fraudsters.

The callers were posing as RCMP officers, including claiming to be sergeants.

They provided false regimental numbers and used technology to ‘spoof’ telephone numbers, making it look like the calls were coming from RCMP, the detachment says.

“Victims reported being told that police were investigating their involvement in a crime or that their personal information had been compromised. The callers then attempted to obtain personal information. In some cases, victims were directed to follow a link. Reports indicate these fraudulent calls have targeted individuals in both Alberta and Ontario,” Red Deer RCMP note in a release.

“Red Deer RCMP is advising anyone who receives these calls not to provide personal information.”

Tips to Protect Yourself from Fraud and Scams

  • Protect your personal information. Never share personal details such as your name, address, date of birth, banking information, or passwords unless you initiated the contact and have verified who you are speaking with.
  • Don’t be afraid to say no. If someone pressures you to send money or provide information immediately, end the conversation. You are not being rude; you are being safe.
  • Verify before you act. If you are unsure about a message, email, or phone call, speak with a family member or someone you trust. You can also visit the organization’s official website and contact them using a verified phone number.
  • Report suspicious activity. Even if you did not lose money or share personal information, reporting scams helps protect others. Contact your local police service or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre also recommends the following if you believe you have been targeted by a scam:

  • Gather all information related to the fraud, including documents, receipts, copies of emails, and text messages.
  • Contact the financial institution involved in any transfer of funds.
  • Share your experience with family, friends, neighbours, and co-workers to help prevent others from becoming victims.

Red Deer RCMP continues to investigate these incidents and asks anyone with information regarding this or any other crime to contact Red Deer RCMP at 403-406-2200.
