Rebels let lead slip away in overtime loss to Hurricanes

Oct 24, 2026 | 9:24 PM

The Red Deer Rebels lost their third straight contest on Saturday night.

Despite carrying a lead into the third period, the Rebels fell 4-3 in overtime to the Lethbridge Hurricanes in front of 3,513 fans at the Centrium.

Head coach Brent Kisio said his team did not play a very good game.

“Lethbridge controlled a lot of the game on our home ice,” he said.

Shortly after Hurricanes forward Dayne Beuker scored the overtime winner, the Rebels challenged the goal for offside.

However, the Western Hockey League officials determined there was no offside on the play, and it was ruled a good goal.

When asked if he agreed with the ruling, Kisio had no problem with the call.

“We’ve just got to get back to work,” Kisio added. “Complacency is settling in with our group, and we’ve got to realize if we don’t work, we’re not going to have success.”

On the bright side, the Rebels earned a point in the effort after reaching overtime. They remain in first place in the Central Division standings with a 7-4-1-1 record.

In the first period, the Rebels went down early after the Hurricanes capitalized on a turnover.

In the defensive zone, a Rebels forward fanned on an outlet pass, which landed on the stick of Beuker in the slot. He fired a shot that beat goaltender Matthew Kondro just under a minute and a half in.

However, the Rebels responded big with three unanswered goals before the end of the first period.

The first two were from rookie forward Jake Banicevic, who notched back-to-back tallies.

His first came 4:32 into the game with a perfect shot from the left circle, assisted by Patrick Sopiarz.

He then potted his second nearly 10 minutes later, once again assisted by Sopiarz.

Forward Grayden Peterson then made it 3-1 after he knocked in the rebound 20 seconds later. With the goal, Peterson remains on fire with five goals in the last six games.

In the second period, the Hurricanes inched closer with a power-play marker from Gavin Lesiuk exactly nine minutes in.

And in the final frame, Lesiuk struck again, and the Hurricanes found the equalizer with a little over five minutes remaining.

The tying goal came on the power play as forward Patrick Sopiarz was sent to the box for elbowing.

The Hurricanes then ended it in overtime with Beuker’s second of the game.

Rebels goaltender Matthew Kondro made 34 saves on 38 shots.

Meanwhile, Hurricanes netminder Leif Oaten was pulled in the first intermission after allowing three goals on eight shots. Koen Cleaver started the second period and held the Rebels scoreless the rest of the way with 17 saves.

Next up, the Rebels won’t have to wait too long to return to action.

On Tuesday, Oct. 27, the Rebels will host the Saskatoon Blades, followed by the Calgary Hitmen on Friday, Oct. 30. Both games are set for 7 p.m.

Red Deer will then head to Edmonton to face the Oil Kings on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 4 p.m.
