Rebels battle back but come up short against Vees

The Red Deer Rebels battled back but fell just short in a 4-2 loss to the Penticton Vees on Friday night.

Down 3-0 in the second period, the Rebels scored two goals before the end of the frame but were unable to find the equalizer in the third.

Red Deer Rebels head coach Brent Kisio said despite a slow start, the players responded well in the second.

“We fell behind by too much, but I thought we did a good job battling back. We just couldn’t find a way to tie it up. In the third period, we were okay, but I thought they were a little bit more urgent than we were tonight,” Kisio said.

It was the Vees first-ever trip to the Centrium, and they snapped a seven-game losing skid in the process. Meanwhile, the Rebels were attempting to get back in the win column after losing in Calgary last Saturday.

“The guys played hard to the whistle. We just needed some more guys going tonight,” he added.

The Vees got on the board first with a goal from Gavin Kats midway through the opening period.

In the second period, Penticton extended their lead to 3-0 after tallies from Brooks DeMars and Noel Pakarinen.

Before the end of the frame, Rebels forward Poul Andersen scored back-to-back goals to get his team back in the game.

His first came with under four minutes to go, when he beat the goalie on a one-timer from the blue line off a feed from defenceman Kaden Meyer.

Just 36 seconds later, he brought the Rebels within one with a tip in front of the net after a shot from defenceman Jiri Kamas.

The Rebels pushed in the third period to tie the game, but instead the Vees added an empty-netter from Kash Alger-East to seal the deal.

Red Deer outshot their opponents 33-27 in the loss, and Rebels goaltender Matthew Kondro finished with 23 saves.

The Rebels, who still lead the Central Division with a 7-4-0-1 record, have now dropped two games in a row and will look to bounce back against the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Saturday night at the Centrium. Puck drop is at 6 p.m.
