Extending the Thanksgiving table

There is something special about the Thanksgiving table.

It is a place where families gather, stories are shared, familiar dishes are passed from person to person, and—for at least a little while—the hurried pace of everyday life gives way to something simpler. We sit together. We reconnect. We remember what matters.

And somewhere between the turkey and the pumpkin pie, we are reminded to be thankful.

But Thanksgiving can also prompt us to look beyond our own table.

Across our communities, there are people for whom Thanksgiving will look very different. Some are struggling to afford groceries as the cost of everyday necessities continues to rise. Others are facing homelessness or working to find their way back to stable housing. Some simply need a warm meal, a safe place to sleep, and reassurance that they have not been forgotten.

This Thanksgiving, The Mustard Seed invites us to extend our family’s table.

It doesn’t require setting another place or cooking another plate of food. It simply means making room in our gratitude for someone who may be struggling.

A donation to The Mustard Seed can help provide a nourishing meal, a welcoming community, and a warm, safe place to sleep. But the support can extend far beyond a single meal. Depending on the location and an individual’s needs, The Mustard Seed also offers advocacy, spiritual care, help finding employment, and assistance towards stable housing.

Sometimes a meal is where hope begins.

The Mustard Seed’s current Thanksgiving campaign notes that $5.38 can help ensure someone doesn’t go hungry this Thanksgiving while supporting the services surrounding that meal.

Five dollars and thirty-eight cents.

For many of us, that is less than we might spend on a cup of coffee and a snack. Yet when combined with the generosity of others, a small gift becomes part of something much larger.

The numbers tell only part of the story.

Across its locations, The Mustard Seed serves an average of 2,784 meals each day. On an average night, 738 guests receive shelter. Between June 2025 and June 2026, 1,382 clients were supported in securing stable housing.

Behind each of those numbers is a person.

Someone’s mother or father. Someone’s brother or sister. Someone who once had plans that did not go as expected. Someone who may be working through circumstances most of us will never see.

That is easy to forget when we talk about homelessness, hunger and poverty in statistics.

Thanksgiving offers us an opportunity to remember.

It reminds us that community isn’t simply the place where we live. Community is what happens when we recognize one another. It is built when those who have enough reach toward those who don’t. It grows when gratitude becomes generosity.

Perhaps that is one of the most meaningful ways we can give thanks.

Not simply by counting what we have, but by asking how what we have might help someone else.

The need facing organizations such as The Mustard Seed is significant. Rising costs affect the people seeking help and also increase the cost of providing that help. Food, shelter and the necessities of everyday life all cost more. Continued community support makes it possible for The Mustard Seed to keep providing essential services to neighbours who need them.

Donations made through this campaign stay within the donor’s city, supporting people in their local community.

So, this Thanksgiving, when your family gathers around the table, take a moment to appreciate the people beside you. Enjoy the meal. Share the stories. Laugh a little too loudly. Give thanks for the ordinary blessings that can become invisible because we experience them every day.

Then consider extending that table just a little farther.

Someone you’ve never met may need to know there is still a place for them in their community.

Someone who needs a meal.

Someone who needs shelter.

Someone who needs hope.

This Thanksgiving, help create a community everyone can be thankful for.

Give thanks. Give hope. And help make room at the table.
