Alberta’s unmatched tax advantage

Albertans feel the impact of high fuel prices every day, whether commuting to work, taking kids to school, or running a business.

That is especially true in rural Alberta, where people travel significant distances for employment, education, health care and essential services.

Those costs don’t stop at the pump. Farmers need fuel to grow our food. Truckers need it to move goods. Construction companies need it to build homes, roads and businesses.

When transportation costs rise, Albertans feel that pressure in the price of groceries, housing and other necessities. No other province helps people keep more money in their pockets than Alberta, and with our suspension of the fuel tax, Albertans will now pay zero provincial tax at the pump for the rest of the year.

This is one more way our government is acting on our belief that Albertans should keep more of the money they earn.

Albertans already benefit from the lowest overall taxes in Canada, with no payroll tax, provincial capital tax or health care premiums — and the benefits don’t end there.

Every other province imposes sales taxes of up to10% on the goods and services residents purchase every day. In Alberta, that number is, and has always been, zero.

Alberta’s government also reduced personal income taxes last year with a new 8% bracket – the lowest in the country. This tax cut saves individuals up to $750 and families up to $1,500 annually, saving Albertans $1.2 billion in 2025 alone.

And while other provinces charge substantially higher taxes on businesses and investment, Alberta’s corporate income tax is by far the lowest in Canada and amongst the lowest in North America, sitting 30% lower than any other province.

That advantage matters. Lower business taxes attract investment, create jobs and allow employers to spend more on workers, equipment and expansion. It also helps Alberta businesses remain competitive on the national and global stage.

And lower personal taxes matter just as much, rewarding hard work and ensuring families can keep more of every paycheque.

Bottom line: the Alberta tax advantage is real. If Alberta had the same tax system as any other province, Albertans and Alberta businesses would have paid over $20 billion more in taxes last year.

Suspending the fuel tax builds on these advantages. Alberta can take this step because we have restored discipline to the province’s finances. We’ve controlled debt, strengthened savings, and are on track to deliver a sixth consecutive surplus this year.

Fiscal responsibility creates the room to cut taxes, protect essential services and respond when families face higher costs. It’s also why we will not repeat the mistakes of past governments by turning temporary resource revenue into permanent, unsustainable spending.

Our approach is clear: protect essential services, control spending, balance the books, reduce debt, build the Heritage Fund, manage taxpayer dollars responsibly, and — when the numbers genuinely support it — put more money back in Albertans pockets.

Suspending the fuel tax will deliver relief, strengthen our competitive advantage and ensure Alberta remains the best place to live, work, build businesses and raise families for generations to come.

No other province offers the advantages that Alberta does — and we intend to keep it that way.
