Red Deer Public Schools prepare teachers for new Grade 7-9 curriculum ahead of 2027 rollout
Red Deer Public Schools have begun work to prepare teachers for the new provincial Grade 7-9 curriculum.
The division says the curriculum will reach students across the division in the fall of 2027. This preparation is meant to give teachers time to learn the curriculum and what it means for their classrooms in hopes of a smooth transition.
The new curriculum includes social studies, mathematics, career education, financial literacy, physical education, and wellness.
“This work is about making sure our teachers have the time, resources and opportunities to work together as they prepare for these curriculum changes,” said Dan Lower, Deputy Superintendent. “Bringing teachers together to work through the curriculum, develop resources and learn from one another helps build consistency and confidence, while ensuring we are focused on what these changes mean for students and their learning.”
Teachers are being brought together centrally by grade to unpack the new curriculum and collaborate on how it can be brought to life in classrooms.
One of the new curriculum areas is career education and financial literacy. Most notably, the new curriculum creates opportunities for students to explore their interests and strengths, think about future career and education pathways and develop financial literacy skills that can support informed decision-making.
“Career education and financial literacy will give students a strong foundation in skills they can carry with them well beyond the classroom,” Lower added. “Whether they are learning how to manage money, set goals or understand the world of work, these are skills that can help students feel more prepared for the opportunities and responsibilities ahead.”
